As parents we are all too familiar with diapers! Even if, like myself, you’re officially out of the diaper stage, the reminders it all leaves behind is certainly never far from your memory. This is especially true if, like myself, you spent year after year changing diapers of one child after another. Although I feel a bigger question remains to be answered… do you know what’s in the diapers you’re putting on your baby’s sensitive skin? Seventh Generation, a brand I’ve worked with before and personally love, is helping to reveal the truth and change the process with their Free & Clear Diapers!A Seventh Generation Free & Clear diaper is free from the normal chemicals and lotions that are found in most brands of normal diapers. This includes being free from chlorine processing, and free from fragrances, latex, and petroleum based lotions. Free & Clear diapers also do not go through the ECF (elemental chlorine free) whitening process. The ECF is the bleaching process used by most conventional diaper brands to whiten the pulp that goes into their diapers. While the process avoids the use of chlorine gas, it uses chlorine dioxide instead to achieve bleaching. The ECF process can produce chlorinated toxins which are then released into the environment. Seventh Generation only uses a TCF (totally chlorine free) process b y using whitening agents such as hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydrosulfite. These chemicals do not contain chlorine. Processing without chemicals containing chlorine can help reduce the amount of chlorinated toxins released into the environment and help make the world a healthier place for you and your family.

The color of disposable diapers is typically achieved by the addition of color pigments to the inner and outer cover materials. This is also true for Seventh Generation diapers. While most designs on the market use pigments that result in a white color, they use a combination of pigments that result in a light brown color to help distinguish Seventh Generation Free & Clear Diapers from others in the marketplace that are bleached with chlorine containing substances. As a result of direct consumer feedback, Seventh Generation has learned that parents are not interested in using a “see-through” diaper on their child. This is why they continue to add a safe, brown pigment to the outer layer of their diapers.

So yes, they’re better for the environment and safer for our precious children, but do they work? After reviewing a pack of Free & Clear diapers on a little mister in my life (my great “nephew” Blake) we’ve all agreed they held up to the test just as well as any standard brand of disposable diapers we’ve used. They even remained leak proof throughout the night, for the 5hr span that Blake slept. Although my babies are out of the diaper stage now, I’m so happy that there is a safe, ecofriendly option for my future nieces and nephews as well as other babies in my life!
