I love to read and as a busy wife, mom, and blogger I don’t always get time to sit down with a good book as much as I’d like to. When I was asked to review Confessions Of A Catholic Cop by Thomas Fitzsimmons I excitedly agreed even though it wasn’t my usual genre. Change is good and what immediately struck me as a dirty cop drama had me interested! When I later found out that the author was the former bodyguard of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, I was just itching to receive the novel and crack it open.

Synopsis
The rough streets of the South Bronx – home to countless gangs, pimps, and hustlers.  Where a gunshot is as common as a baby crying and a day without a murder is an oddity.  This is where 10-year police veteran Michael Beckett has spent his career. When he lands a walk-on role on “Law & Order,” Beckett hopes to trade chasing criminals for a new life in front of the camera…and maybe even to settle down with the show’s beautiful writer, Solana Ortiz.  But when Solana’s South Bronx neighborhood goes up in flames in a string of arsons, Beckett must put aside his caviar dreams and do what he does best – police work.  With the help of his fanatical partner, Vinnie D’Amato, Beckett unlocks a heinous scheme that reaches into the deepest pockets of power and greed in New York City.

Review
I just zoomed through this thriller (think 74 pages in one day) and loved every single minute of it. Although some scenes in the story seemed a bit exaggerated, I can picture them actually being part of everyday life in the South Bronx. The story drew me in and not only captured my attention, but kept it until the very end. It wasn’t tough enough to be geared only for men, and it wasn’t sappy enough to be geared only for women. I loved the balance! I will warn you that it does contain some harsh slang and language, so if you’re easily offended, you might need to take this into consideration first. Confessions Of A Catholic Cop was filled with a variety of raw emotions from loneliness to anger, love to betrayal, this book had a bit of everything as it brought me on an adventure into a world I will probably never visit, and a life I definitely won’t live.

About The Author
Thomas Fitzsimmons didn’t need to hire a team of researchers to write gritty crime stories. For Fitzsimmons, it was as simple as recalling his life.Fitzsimmons was raised in a family of career cops in an Irish neighborhood in the Bronx, New York. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Fitzsimmons joined the New York City Police Department. During his 10-year career in the South Bronx precinct dramatized in Paul Newman’s “Fort Apache-The Bronx,” Thomas Fitzsimmons notched numerous arrests, collaring armed robbers, drug kingpins, and arsonists. He has optioned film treatments to Doug Wick, Academy Award winning producer of “Gladiator,” to the actor Ray Liotta, and Larry “JR” Hagman’s Majlar Productions.
