I’m sure we’re all familiar with Chicken Soup for the Soul books. After all, they have been around since June 1993 and I have personally enjoyed reading many editions that have hit the bookshelves since I was a child. I’m even happier to announce I am now part of the Chicken Soup for the Soul blogger network where I will be receiving the latest editions and reviewing them for all of you.

Being a preteen is harder than it looks! School is more challenging, bodies are changing, relationships with parents are different, and new issues arise with friends. Chicken Soup for the Soul: Just for Teenagers provides support and inspiration for teenagers as they grow up, reminding them they are not alone, as they read stories from teens just like themselves about the problems and issues they face every day. The stories in this book serve as a guide on topics from the daily pressures of life and school to love, friendships, parents, and much more. This collection will encourage, inspire, and amuse teens, showing that, as tough as things can get, they are not alone!
Although my oldest child is only 7, I can truly see some tween issues already arising and needing to be addressed. Kenna has recently asked about the hair on her legs (peach fuzz) and is requesting “older” items, like a backpack sans characters and Converse All Stars instead of Twinkle Toes. While I am so amazingly proud of my daughter, she’s certainly growing up right before my eyes. I plan to read the Just for PreTeens Chicken Soup for the Soul book myself and then, if everything is age appropriate for my young one, I will allow Makenna to read it herself. I hope these stories will inspire her and help her know she isn’t weird or odd as she goes through many changes.
I plan to hang on to the Just for Teenagers book because I, like all of us, know how fast time passes. It’s only a matter of what feels like minutes before my children will be needing this book. I’m sure I’ll be reading it as well so that I can get a teen perspective on problems I am sure are on their way. No harm can come from being prepared right?

My nephew just turned 12, so he’s really right on the cusp of ‘teenhood’. I really think he could benefit from these books! Sometimes it just helps to know that you’re not alone in the way you feel and the problems you have. One of the biggest challenges of adolescence is overcoming that sense of isolation from the rest of the world…the feeling that ‘nobody could ever understand me or what I’m going through’. Maybe these books could help my nephew realize that his feelings and problems are totally normal, and that they will pass.

Although both of my sons are a bit young for these editions – my cousins daughter is 12 and I think that the one for teens would be perfect for her. I’ve been reading the Chicken Soup series since I was nine, and have been waiting a couple years for another teen version to come out! As a teen myself, I’m excited to read the new, updated version of Teenage Soul, because the one I have doesn’t really cover all the new issues that we face as teens today.
